Frequently asked questions by patients undergoing cataract surgery

 
  • Q. How soon can I drive after the operation?

A. Usually after 2-3 days. Pls. confirm at your first post-operative appointment.

 

 
  • Q. Can I wear glasses afterwards? Will they help?

A. Yes, they will help the non-operated eye and will not do any harm, although your sight may be. Sunglasses will be a large help for outdoor or glary conditions.

 

 
  • Q. When do I get new glasses?

A. Most people will need to use glasses after the surgery, usually for reading and sometimes for. Your ophthalmologist or  optometrist will be able to prescribe them 4-6 weeks after the operation, when the has stabilized.

 

 
  • Q. How much exercise do I do afterwards? Can I lift and bend? Can I garden?

A. All of these activities may be resumed after one day. However, only light exercise and gardening is advisable for the first week. Pls. make sure to wear protective glasses while gardening.

 

 
  • Q. Can I wash my hair? Can I go to the hairdresser?

A. Yes, the day after the operation.

 

 
  • Q. When can I recommence wearing make-up?

A. After you have seen the doctor at the first post-operative appointment.

 

 
  • Q. How soon can I have the next eye done?

A. Usually, 2-4 weeks after the first eye has been operated on, and when the doctor is happy with the result.

 

 
  • Q. When do I have double-vision? (Very rare)

A. This is due to the local anesthetic administered before the operation. This may last between 12-12 hours.
