Frequently asked questions by patients undergoing cataract surgery

 
  • Q. I have "flickers" out the side of my eye. Why?

A. This is due to the local anesthetic administered before the operation. This may last between 12- 24 hours.

 

 
  • Q. Why do I have blurriness or halos around lights?

A. This is may be due to mild post-operative swelling on the cornea and dilation of the pupil. It usually improves in the first 48 hours and clears 2-4 weeks after surgery.  

 

 
  • Q. Do I need to wear the eye shield?

A. The eye shield must be worn at night for 1 week after the surgery. Pls. check with your doctor.

 

 
  • Q. I have an irritation body feeling in my eye. Why?

A. This is due to the eyelids rubbing over the small on the eye and well usually reduce over 3-4 weeks. Lubricant drops may help reduce the irritation.

 

 
  • Q. How soon can I drink alcohol after my surgery?

A. The day after the surgery.

 

 
  • Q. Can I watch TV or read after the discharge from hospital?

A. Yes, as normal. These activities will not harm your eye(s).

 

 
  • Q. How soon can I swim (salt water and chlorine) after surgery?

A. One week after surgery.

 

 
  • Q. How soon can I play tennis/aerobics/golf/bowls?

A. One week after surgery.

 

 
  •  Q. How soon can I fly? (holidays, interstate etc.)

A. Usually the day after the surgery . However, check first with your doctor.
